Hello!
My name is Helen, and I am an Autistic 20-something Michigander now living in the United Kingdom. In addition to being a writer and YouTuber, I am also an activist for various causes, including intersectional feminism, the Queer community, disability rights, and the rights of immigrants.
Currently, I make videos and write on topics that pique my interest, such as my Autism diagnosis, my experiences as an American immigrant in the UK, and whatever interests I happen to be hyperfixated on. If you love movies, music, Eurovision, or figure skating/gymnastics, consider my corner of the internet a safe space to express your fandom!
Because my disability limits the amount of available energy I can set aside for creativity, I don't currently have a set schedule for written posts or uploads. As such. I highly recommend subscribing to my YouTube channel to be alerted when my videos are published!
The causes that I am passionate about heavily influence my writing, from writing inclusive fantasy fiction to analyzing and promoting women-led cinema. To that end, in 2020 I produced a series of videos titled “Women in Film Reviews” on my Youtube channel filmgeek520 where I discussed films directed by women and how they interact and overturn sexist tropes. Season Two is available to watch here.
From 2021 until 2023 I was a contributing writer at That Eurovision Site As part of my work with them, I have published over 50 articles, appeared on and hosted That Eurovision Podcast, provided live-tweeting of various national finals, and conducted two artist interviews.
As mentioned before, a significant part of my story involves my journey as an immigrant in the UK. After completing a semester abroad at York St. John University in 2016, I fell in love with Britain and eventually departed my lifelong home of Traverse City, Michigan to live in London. My spouse Tim and I currently reside in West Yorkshire (though they can attest that I am still very much a Midwestern gal!).
I obtained my BA in Writing from Calvin University and my MA in Screenwriting from the London Film School. I have been making YouTube content since 2012, and my work has been published in The Huffington Post, The Post Calvin, and Rotoscopers. Additionally, I have been featured as a guest on “The Eurowhat?” podcast, and have appeared on BBC Breakfast.
If my content interests you and you’d like to support me, you can subscribe to my YouTube channels and follow me on my social media, which you can find on my Linktree. My Patreon is currently paused.
